FAQ or What the heck is publicity?

FAQ

When should I call a publicist?

It’s much easier to begin promoting a book before it is published. The same goes for a new business. Consider calling a publicist at 6 months ahead of the date of publication or launch, or at the very latest- 2 months so you can lay out the foundation of your marketing/publicity platform. We do publicize already published books- to give a little boost, but if it’s older than a year old, unless it’s non-fiction it’s tough to garner media. That’s why you should consider publicity as soon as you finish writing!

Why do you need a book publicist?

With the book industry slashing their in-house marketing budgets, and the media being assailed with author requests, publishers are relying more than ever on outsourced book publicists to give them what they want. Topical, interesting angles to hit their target audiences and sell books. As  book publicists, we have the contacts and relationships it takes to reach the media and tell them about your amazing product. You can’t do everything yourself. Let us take the weight off of your shoulders and do the work for you.

Are you a right fit for our company?
Every author or business that we work on has to be a right fit for our style and your goals. Not everyone is a good fit, but we sure like to see if it will work! We like to think that we are easy going but we have very high standards when it comes to books or businesses that we take on as clients. If you are submitting a book or manuscript for our consideration, we will read it from start to finish and give you an assessment. Like it or not, we are very honest and if you crumble at criticism then you might not be a good fit for us. Of course one of our team members can be swayed with a nice bottle of scotch, so you never know. Ultimately,  we want to work with books and businesses that we can get excited about- that could be you!!

What kind of media will you contact for publicity?
We have an excellent and always growing  updated database, and access to the news-wire and any kind of new media that is trending. We focus on Canadian and U.S media, but we are always looking for other countries to reach.
We send our marketing materials to television stations and networks, radio, podcasts, blogs, daily and weekly newspapers, online and in print, magazines, online postings, freelance journalists, and news services and syndicates. Our success rate is growing all the time and we are ready to adapt to all changes in the media.

How do I get a return on my investment?

Well, that’s a good question. We can never guarantee publicity, so it’s a little difficult to determine. However, with our contacts and success rates we certainly can guarantee that we will give you the marketing tools, professional expertise, and passion behind everything we do. Our passion shows in the work we do and that makes us the best choice for your book or business publicity.

If I sign up with you, does that mean I automatically have a literary agent?

Nope, sorry- (unless you are sending Glenmorangie by express- then maybe-but he only works with non-fiction books!) If you are interested in having Brian be your agent I will accept queries and will send you a list of requirements. He will give you his honest assessment before determining if you fit his roster.  Yes he knows your book is amazing- but he needs more than the word of your family and friends for him to take you on as a client. If you aren’t a good fit, he will politely decline, but let you know what you can improve upon to find an agent that will work well with you. He won’t leave you hanging!
